Student charged with threatening mass violence

A Grundy County High School student has been with criminal charges and faces a year of suspension after he allegedly made a threat of mass violence against the school.

The name of the student has not been revealed. The sheriff’s office revealed it began investigating the threat and determined the threat was credible. The finding led to charges being leveled against the student. The exact nature of the threat has not been released other than it was a threat of mass violence.

In a message to parents of the school system, the school administration outlined the punishment and what went on behind the scene in determining the threat was made. Grundy County Schools comments read in full:

“The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority. We want to inform you of a serious situation involving a threat of mass violence at Grundy County High School.

On Monday, October 26, 2026, just before dismissal, school administration received a report concerning a threat of mass violence made by a student. The student was immediately suspended pending an investigation and threat assessment.

On October 27, 2026, a threat assessment was conducted, and the threat was determined to be valid. Grundy County Board of Education Policy 6.309, Zero Tolerance Offenses, specifically identifies the following as a zero-tolerance offense under Item 5:

“Valid threats of mass violence on school property or at a school-related activity as determined by a threat assessment team.”

The policy further states: “Committing any of these offenses shall result in a student being expelled from the regular school program for at least one (1) calendar year unless modified by the Director of Schools. Students that commit zero tolerance offenses may be assigned to an alternative school or program at the discretion of the Director of Schools.”

Grundy County Schools takes all threats seriously and will follow the disciplinary procedures outlined in Board policy. The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office is also involved, and further action has been taken by law enforcement.

We understand that situations such as this are concerning for families. Please know that we are committed to maintaining a safe learning environment and will continue working closely with law enforcement to address threats to the safety of our schools. We encourage parents and students to immediately report any statements, messages, or behaviors that suggest a potential threat to school safety. Reports can be made directly to school administrators or law enforcement.

Thank you for your continued trust and support as we work together to keep Grundy County High School a safe place for students and staff.”
