Parker, Walkden set to compete in TSSAA Track and Field State Championships

Abby Parker and Scarlet Walkden will become the first track and field athletes to represent Grundy County High School at the TSSAA State Championships when they travel to Knoxville for next week’s Class A competitions.

Parker, a junior, qualified for the state meets by placing third in the high jump and fifth in the pentathlon at last week’s Class A East Sectional in Maryville. Walkden, a senior, earned her spot at state with a secondplace finish in the high jump and a third-place finish in the triple jump.

The two are scheduled to compete at the University of Tennessee on Tuesday, May 19. Both are registered for the high jump, and Walkden the triple jump. Parker was one of 12 to participate in the pentathlon at Hardin Valley Academy on Wednesday, but results were not available at press time.

Freshman Joy Livesay also qualified for the state championships with a second-place finish in the pentathlon, but she did not compete due to injury.
