Highlander Folk School subject at Heritage Center

A symposium of those in attendance will be held on Saturday, May 16, at 2 p.m. in the teaching center of the Heritage Center located at 465 Railroad Avenue in Tracy City. Oliver W. Jervis, JD, Museum Chair, Director of Exhibits and Historian will initiate the symposium with a summary of Highlander in Grundy County from 1932 to 1962. After revocation of its charter by the state of Tennessee, the school secured a new charter as Highlander Research and Education Center to be located in Knoxville. After 10 years it relocated in New Market, Tenn., where it now thrives.

Swiss Memorial Elementary School fifth grade student Aryia Smith. Aryia is a wonderful student who quietly excels behind the scenes. She doesn’t seek attention for her intelligence or her kindness, yet both shine through in everything she does. Aryia has a unique personality–she is sassy yet sweet, smart yet humble, and funny yet gracious. She brings a positive presence to those around her and consistently demonstrates strong character. Overall, Aryia is an exceptional student and a valued member of her class.

The Warren County Genealogical and Historical Association will meet Saturday, May 16, at 2 p.m. in the Magnolia Room of the WC Administration Building located at 201 Locust Street in McMinnville. The program will be presented by Park Ranger, Damon Graham, of Rock Island State Park. The ranger will bring up-to-date information on the Cardwell Mountain project. If anyone has information, photos, etc. on Dark Hollow off of Highway 8 please, contact the WCGHA Archives (931-474-4227) as research is underway on this area. Visitors are always welcome at Association Meetings.

Graduation is quickly approaching, and excitement is building as seniors prepare to celebrate one of the biggest milestones of their high school journey. The 2026 graduation ceremony will take place May 14 at 7 p.m., and is scheduled to be held on the football field, weather permitting. In the event of inclement weather, changes to the location will be announced.

Helpers event this Saturday

Held in partnership with American Revival, the festival will serve as both a celebration and a call to action—bringing neighbors together around shared values of care, connection, and collective impact.

UDC Chapter honors Confederate Memorial Day

April 26 is Confederate Memorial Day in Tennessee. Members of the Kirby-Smith Chapter 327 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) hosted a service at the Tullahoma Confederate Cemetery. Chapter President Ginger Delius presided over the event. Rebecca Odell, historian, placed a wreath at the monument that honors the Confederate dead. Syble Throneberry, memorial chairman, posted the First National Flag of the Confederacy. The monument was erected in 1964 by the Tullahoma Civil War Commission. Four hundred and seven soldiers have been identified. The first recorded interment was in November 1862.
