Early voting begins Friday

Early voting is underway for municipal, state and national elections in Grundy County, allowing local residents to cast their ballots before the Election Day. It is encouraged to attend early voting to avoid possible lines on Election Day.

There are two locations that voting will be held. You can either go to the Plainview Community Center in Tracy City or the City Hall in Altamont. The address for the Community Center is 1235 SR Highway 56, and the address to the City Hall is 1433 Main St. Both establishments will run from July 17 to August 1 and will be open with the same hours; Mon. through Fri. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sat. 9 a.m. to noon. Remember to bring an acceptable Tennessee photo ID, which could be a driver’s license, military ID, or another federal issued ID. Student IDs, library cards, and out-of-state driver’s licenses are not valid.

Along with state and national races, Grundy County will have a lot of local races settled this election.

The office of County Mayor is up for grabs as Republican Michael Brady will be squaring off against Independent Jason Peterson. For sheriff there is a large field as Republican David Strieby will face a group of four Independents including Heath Gunter, Chris Layne, Virgil McNeece and James Garrett Whitman. For Road Superintendent, Hubert Dewayne Turkey Hargis and Michael Meeks will do battle while for Register of Deeds Republican Kelly Gibbs will face a trio of Independents including Jenny Thomas Baseheart, Candy Sanders Geary and Amelia Whitman Owenby. For County Trustee and pair of Independents will go one-on-one as Sam T. Johnson faces Millard Chris Rogers.

For County Commission in District 1 a pair of Republicans, Mike Cordell and Danny M. Lusk will take on three Independents including Darrell Camp, David Lockhart and Chris Northcutt. Voter get to vote for three in that district. There is also an unexpired term to be decided in the 1st District. That race will pit Darian Cordell against Colby L. Ladd. Only one can win that race.

In the Second District, Republicans Gary “Rooster” Brewer and Allen “Big Al” Joslyn face opposition by a trio of Independents including Matthew Layne, Barry Wade Hornbuckle and Tom Meeks. Voters get to choose three in the second.

In the third there are just three running, all Independents. They include David Griswold, Don Hutcheson and Millard Chris Rogers. Voters will vote for three in the third.

School Board District 1 has three Independents including Dustin Campbell, Tiffany Layne Winton and Shala Barrett Wohlgemuth. Voters will choose two. District 2 will have Republican Linda Slatton Broom face Independent Colby L. Ladd. Voters get to choose one winner in the second. In the 3rd District, Republican Joseph Kyle Collins takes on Democrat Lynda Kylene McDonald and Independent Erin Fizer. Only one can win the third.

Constable in District 1 will see Chris Boyd elected as he has no opposition. In District 2, Justin Cannon, Republican, will face Independent John T. Dykes. In District 3 it will be Patrick Joseph Stefanski versus Dakota Tuders.

The state and national ballot will be for party nominations. There are also some judicial retention questions on the ballot.
