Yellow Jackets rally to Defeat Rebels

Posted on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at 10:17 am

The Grundy County Yellow Jackets split two games last week with the margin of victory a mere four combined points. These two games came on the heels of a four-point rally for a victory at Huntland. The Jackets record now stands at 3 – 7, but a break here or there and we would be talking about a winning record.

The Jackets lost a heart breaker to Monterey last Tuesday night as the visitors made a shot inside 10 seconds to defeat the Jackets 65 – 64. Thursday night, the Jackets seemed to learn from that loss with a furious fourth quarter rally to defeat the once beaten Franklin County Rebels 67 – 64.

IMG_6502The Jackets returned to action Monday night in Manchester taking part in the Red Raider Christmas Tournament. I apologize for omitting these games in last week’s edition. They played Monday, Tuesday, and last night in the tournament. The Jackets will still be in the Whitwell Christmas tournament starting next Wednesday.

The Jackets jumped out to a 10 point halftime lead, only to see the Wildcats rally in the third quarter to take a one point lead. Both teams played even in the fourth quarter with the visitors scoring inside 10 seconds to steal the win from the Jackets 65 – 64. Trey Hampton poured in 19 points to lead the Jackets. Kollyn Cooper added 13 points.

The Jackets felt if the Wildcats can do it, so can we! The Jackets trailed by 11 points at the end of the third quarter and saw that deficit balloon to 14 with less than six minutes to play.  The Jackets did manage to get the lead to single digits on a Trent Hampton basket at 58 – 49 with 4:38 to play.  The lead had jumped back to double digits at 61 – 51 when sophomore guard Johnnie Adkins buried a three pointer to trim the Rebel lead to 61 – 54 with 2:12 to play.  The Jackets used relentless defensive pressure to force the Rebels into three straight turnovers and three point bombs from Trey Hampton, Adkins, and Kollyn Cooper sandwiched around single free throws from Adkins and Cooper and the Jackets were ahead 65 – 64. Cooper’s three at :43.0 gave the Jackets the lead. After a couple of exchanges by both teams, the Rebels made a turnover and Cooper sealed the big victory with two charity tosses at the :01.3 mark.  Trey Hampton and Adkins led the scoring with 17 points, while Cooper added 12 points.
