Grundy only got in two games over the last week as Lookout Valley cancelled Saturday due to their prom and Monday’s senior night game with Whitwell was postponed. The Jackets split their games downing Notre Dame in a district contest and falling to rival Marion County Friday. Grundy baseball is now 25-11 overall and upped their district mark to 12-3.
“The Notre Dame series was huge for us. Going into it we needed to get a split to win the district. The first night was back and forth and we ended up getting out of there with a one run win. We had a couple of breaks the second night and were able to run away with it. The score is not at all indicative of the kind of team Notre Dame is. They’re a very good team and we could very likely see them again or Sequatchie in the three game series in the district. We’re going to have to play very well to advance past those guys. That’s what our focus is.
Against Jasper we had opportunities to score. I felt like we played well. We had quality at bats when we needed them we just couldn’t find the openings. We had runners in scoring position and the baseball just found a glove. Sometimes it goes like that,” said Coach Chase Jones.
Monday’s senior night game with Whitwell was scheduled for make up on Wednesday. The district tournament begins Friday for Grundy with a best of three games series against a winner from Thursday’s play-in games. The Jackets will host a game Friday and then travel on Saturday to that same opponent. If a third game is needed it will be played Monday at Grundy. The district championship will be either Wednesday or Thursday of next week and the location will depend on the two teams playing. Final details for the tourney were being decided Wednesday after press time. Get out and support the Yellow Jackets this week Yellow Jacket fans!
