The football season came to a close Friday night for the Grundy County Yellow Jackets, as they lost to the Red Bank Lions 50 – 6 in the first round of the playoffs. The Jackets ended the season with a 2 – 8 record.
During an historic year in all aspects of life, the Grundy County Yellow Jacket football team was able to play all but one of its scheduled games. The only game the team had to cancel was the Cannon County game on Oct. 2. The game was recorded as a win for the Lions, but not a loss for the Yellow Jackets due to COVID-19 issues.

Gameplay
The top-seeded Lions of Region 3, Class 3A were able to turn Yellow Jacket turnovers into points and were able to make big plays on third-and-long to score often in building an insurmountable 44 – 0 lead at the half. A touchdown on the Lions’ first possession of the second half was their final points of the night.
The Jackets were able to avoid the shutout when freshman quarterback Cecil Rodgers hit senior Jacob Dixon on a 23-yard slant. Dixon knifed into the end zone from inside the 10 yard line to put the Yellow Jackets on the board as time expired.
The Jackets fought hard and played pretty tough run defense for the most part. However, the talented Lions used their speed and size at wide receiver to overpower the fourth-seeded Yellow Jackets of Region 4, Class 3A.
The Jackets will lose a large group of seniors who fought to the bitter end this season. When many thought they might “mail it in” after dropping the first five games of the season, the group of more than a dozen seniors refused to quit. Both student athletes and coaches battled furiously over the last half of the 2020 season.
Hopefully, this season’s hardships will give the remaining and upcoming Jackets momentum as they head into the offseason to work extremely hard to get ready for 2021. Also, hopefully, more students with the ability to play the game of football will be inspired to come out for the team to help this program continue to move forward.
