Turnovers prove to be costly for the Jackets

The Jackets started off their first season game making the long haul to East Hickman High School. Although the Jackets were making drives, they couldn’t secure the ball to make gains as they fell to the Eagles 28-8.
Offensively, Grundy’s first three drives down the field all had offensive plays gaining yards but ended in fumbles. This would be the theme for the rest of the game. The Jackets threatened several times but couldn’t hang on to the ball as they kept turning the ball over, with one fumble going through the end zone as Hagen Cash crossed the goal line resulting in a touch back.
“We obviously have corrections to make in terms of ball control and tackling. If we don’t fumble and make tackles on third and long, we win that game. This team is capable and made up of hard working men. They will work with the coaching staff and get these mistakes corrected,” says head coach Casey Tate.
As a team, Grundy had 138 yards rushing with Cash leading the way with 13 rushes for 46 yards and a touchdown. Ethan Nunley had 6 rushes for 43 yards. Evan Nunley carried the ball 4 times for 25 yards. Hunter Sylvester was 3 for 10 yards. Chase Nance had 2 rushes for 8 yards and Daygon Dodson had 2 rushes for 6 yards.
Through the air Cash was 9 for 17 for 87 yards and an interception. Jaden Ruehling had 4 receptions for 35 yards. Evan Nunley had 2 catches for 30 yards. Ethan Nunley had 3 for 14 yards and Jordan Hackworth had 1 reception for 18 yards.
The defense showed good effort defending the short field that the turnovers created, but it proved to be too much to overcome. East Hickman was able to score 28 points while covering short ground.
Corbin Lusk led the way for the Jackets defense with 9 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 1 sack and 1 assist. Aaron Comer followed with 4 tackles and 1 tackle for loss. Hackworth and Sylvester each had 3 tackles. Nicky Johnson had 2 tackles and 2 tackles for loss; Dagon Dodson, Ethan Nunley, Chase Meeks and Josh Nance all had 2 tackles each. Cash had 1.
Ethan Nunley contributed for the Jackets on special teams with 1 punt return for 7 yards and 1 kick return for 36 yards. Chase Nance had 3 kick returns for 43 yards and Hagen Cash had 1 punt for 26 yards.
Tomorrow night the Jackets play their first home against the Eagles of Ezell Harding High School. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Grundy fans dig out your purple and gold and come out and cheer these guys on. These young men have been working hard and deserve a large crowd to help them rally. GO GRUNDY!
