A recent report listed Grundy County as the poorest county in Tennessee. Data collected from the Census Bureau’s American Community Surveys from 2009 to 2013 reveal that Grundy County’s median annual income is more than $17,484 below the state average.

*Poverty rate in Grundy County 2009-2013: 29.7%
*Unemployment in Grundy County 2009-2013: 9.5%
These figures are noted as being especially poor, even in Tennessee, which has some of the lower statewide incomes in the nation. The study attributes lack of higher education as a contributing cause – only 10% of county residents hold a bachelor’s degree while only 70.5% have completed high school. These rates are cited as among the lowest in the nation.
