A 17-year-old boy, identified as Skyler Copeland of Tracy City, passed away after drowning in the reservoir on Mountain View Lane in Tracy City, on Saturday.
“At approximately 6:30 p.m., a father and his two sons were fishing on the reservoir,” stated Grundy County Sheriff Clint Shrum on Saturday evening as the recovery was underway. “Their boat flipped, and the father and one son made it to the shore. The second son did not make it to the shore and drowned.”
First responders, including Grundy County EMS, the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, the Tracy City Police Department, and volunteer fire departments from Monteagle, Tracy City, Coalmont, Gruetli-Laager, Palmer, and Beersheba Springs, searched the reservoir for approximately three hours before locating the body. According to the Sheriff, a dive team was called in from Franklin County to assist in the recovery. The dive team used sonar technology to locate Skyler’s body, eventually found in about 20-feet of water.
Tracy City Police Department Assistant Chief A. J. Cunningham reported that the body was recovered at 9:36 p.m.
Cunningham and Sergeant Paul Sweeton, also of the Tracy City Police Department, urge everyone to use caution when on the water and always wear a life vest.
“I have nothing but praise for all of the first responders,” stated Cunningham. “The recovery of Skyler’s body would not have been possible without the aid of everyone involved.”
