SVEC Youth Tour Visits Washington, D.C

Posted on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at 8:31 am

SVEC WASHINGTON TRIPThis is a big year for Sequachee Valley Electric Cooperative! We are celebrating our 75th anniversary of our cooperative and 45 years of sending our best and brightest on the “trip-of-a-lifetime” – the Washington Youth Tour. We would like to honor the past and the most current participants at the Annual Meeting August 14, at South Pittsburg High School.
In June, Breanne Rackley of Bledsoe County High School; Courtney Jones, Grundy County High School; Nycollette Helm, Marion County High School; Brandt Tate, Richard Hardy Memorial School; Anita Cribbs, Sequatchie County High School; Jessie King, South Pittsburg High School and Katie Rains of Whitwell High School were the latest delegates to represent SVEC on this trip. The tradition began in 1969 when the co-op sent its first delegate, Billy Joe Davis of Bledsoe County High School and his Junior English teacher, Miss Lucile Hamilton on the Rural Electric Youth Tour, a program that was only five-years old at the time.
Since that first year the program grew from one student representing the co-op to a boy and a girl delegate and then into the present practice of sending one student from each of the seven public high schools in the SVEC service area. Over the 45 years almost 250 SVEC area high school juniors have won the trip by writing a prize winning essay or short story that conveys the Rural Electric Cooperative story.
As we near time for the SVEC 75 Anniversary Annual Meeting, we would like to invite all past SVEC Youth Tour Participants to this historic Annual Meeting for a reunion and to be recognized. We have lost touch with some of our past winners and there are even a couple of years (1978 and 1979) that we have no records of the winners. If you are a past SVEC Youth Tour delegate, or if you know someone who is, please contact your local SVEC office or call or email Cathy Black at or 800-923-2203 extension 5044 with any information that might help us contact our past winners or to let us know if you plan to attend the meeting. We would like to have a good turnout of past participants at our Annual Meeting on August 14, at South Pittsburg High School.
The doors will open to the public at 4:30 p.m. and the business meeting will begin at 6:00. In addition to the Youth Tour reunion and recognition, we will have historical displays, a BBQ dinner for attendees as well as a special 75th Anniversary commemorative 10-in Lodge skillet as an attendance gift and a commemorative SVEC history book for each registered membership. There will of course be many very nice door prizes given at the conclusion of the business meeting.
All SVEC members are invited to attend this special Annual Meeting to celebrate the accomplishments of the past 75 years and to look forward at the great things to come in the next 75!
