Charles D. “Steamboat” Layne, of Palmer, will celebrate his 80th birthday on September 4. Layne is a son of the late Roy and Louise Geary Layne, married to the former Nell James. They are the parents of Rolanda Summers and Dale “Undertaker” Layne. In 1956, Layne was among a group of Grundy County volunteers who joined the U.S. Navy. Others were Carl “Chunk” Flynn, Carl Hornbuckle, Alton Scissom, John Henry Anderson, Bobby Stinnett, and Carl Ed Nunley. Layne served on the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal with the late Max Nunley of Coalmont. Retired from Carrier Corporation, Layne still plants his backyard garden and is a familiar figure at Layne Funeral Home. “‘Steamboat’ is still steaming right along, and we want to congratulate him on this milestone birthday,” says Palmer Town Historian David Patton. Layne is pictured during boot camp at Bainbridge, MD.
