The Grundy County Lady Yellow Jacket softball team are playing some of their best softball as post season is set to begin. They went 2 – 1 in district play last week, to complete District 7 AA regular season play with a 7 – 3 record and locked up the third seed in the upcoming district tournament.
The Lady Jackets defeated Signal Mountain 13 – 1 last Monday and Notre Dame 20 – 2 last Thursday. Sandwiched between those wins was a 4 – 0 loss at Sequatchie County on Tuesday night.
Head coach Jason Evans said about the road ahead, “Although we didn’t get to host the district tournament, I’m very happy where we are right now. This is a different team that started the season. We’ve improved leaps and bounds from where we started.”
The Lady Jackets used a nine run third inning and a walk off grand slam in the fifth to get the season sweep of the Lady Eagles. Liz Morgan led the offensive explosion with three hits and six RBIs. She also scored two runs, but the highlight of the night was her walk off grand slam in the bottom of the fifth. Emilee Meeks added three hits as well, including two doubles. She also scored three runs and drove home three more. Chloe Scissom had two hits and scored two runs. Bailee Sweeton threw the final four innings after starting pitcher Makayla Nunley went one inning. Sweeton gave up three hits in securing the victory.
Sequatchie County 4 Lady Jackets 0
The Lady Indians avenged their loss last week from the Lady Jackets with the 4 – 0 shutout. The margin of victory gave the Lady Indians the second seed and bye into the double elimination of the district tournament. Nunley pitched well giving up six hits over six innings. The Lady Indians managed only one earned run of the four they scored. Single runs in the fourth and fifth and two runs in the sixth sealed the win. The Lady Jackets stranded 11 baserunners. Scissom with three hits and Emilee Meeks added two hits.
Freshman Emma Seagroves had four hits that were all doubles to lead the hit parade. Seagroves scored four runs and drove home four more. Emilee Meeks had two hits including an inside the park grand slam. She also scored three runs and drove home five. Meleah Stevens had two hits including a double. She scored three runs and drove home two. Scissom had two hits and scored two runs. Kara Meeks had two hits including a double and two RBIs.
Coach Evans added, “We host a district play in game on Thursday (today) against the sixth seed.
“If we execute successfully in that game we will play Sequatchie in the first round of the double elimination part of the tournament in Dunlap on Friday (tomorrow).” “I truly feel like this team can win the district tournament and I hope everyone will come out and support these fine young women.”
The Lady Jackets will play sixth seed Notre Dame on Thursday.
