The report states that late Sunday night, deputies were called to Yates’ residence in Coalmont.

According to the arresting officer, Deputy Coby Scissom:

“I spoke with Mike Yates who stated he and his wife both had been drinking and a argument started. At some point, he advised she got in his face and hit him
in the top of the head. Mr. Yates stated he then defended himself.
“Deputy Wildes spoke with Michelle Yates who stated her and her husband were arguing and they had called each other some names. Ms. Yates stated at that point
Mr. Yates hit her and then kicked her in the face.
“Mr. Yates had a small scuff on his forehead, and Ms. Yates had swelling of her left eye which was bruised. Ambulance was called for Ms. Yates who was transported to the hospital
to be checked out. Ms. Yates stated she did wish for charges to be pressed.
“Mr. Yates was placed under arrest for Aggravated Domestic Assault and transported to the Grundy County Jail.”

PREVIOUS ARREST FOR ASSAULT

Yates was arrested December 2015, also for assault.

During that arrest, Grundy County Sheriff Clint Shrum told the Herald that deputies responded with EMS to the Yates residence after receiving a 911 call.

“Yates was not home when deputies arrived,” says Shrum. “However, based on Mrs. Yates statement and injuries, it appeared there was some type of physical altercation. Because Yates could not be found at that moment, we could not determine if he had any injuries or receive a statement from him.”

The sheriff’s office presented information gathered from law enforcement on the scene, EMS, the 911 call, and the injuries sustained by Mrs. Yates to the District Attorney’s Office for review.

“It was determined there was enough evidence to obtain a warrant for domestic assault,” stated Shrum.

A warrant was issued and Yates was arrested for domestic assault.

At the time of the 2015 arrest, Yates was also a school board member. He resigned two months after his arrest. Yates was reelected to the Grundy County School Board in the past election.
