The Caverns and PVFD provide a joyful Christmas for Pelham families

The Caverns and Pel-ham Valley Volunteer Fire Department joined together for the 2018 Christmas Convoy and it was a huge success. Joe Lurgio with The Caverns initially contacted PVFD Chief Travis Lawyer in November, to let the fire department know The Caverns had a toy drive underway. Lurgio said they were asking each guest of The Caverns to donate a toy with their admission to the show they were attending.
The folks came, and they delivered!
Justin Mayo, also with The Caverns, rolled into the Pelham Fire Station on Sunday morning on The Caverns’ bus packed full with an estimated 300 toys ranging from bicycles to baby dolls.
“Anything a child would need to brighten their eyes on Christmas morning was in the load,” said Chief Lawyer. “The firefighter’s stood in disbelief of what was coming in.”
In addition to The Caverns’ Christmas Convoy Toy Drive, PVFD held their annual “Pictures with Santa” event on Sunday.
“The Ladies’ Auxiliary works very hard on organizing and making the fire department’s Christmas event a success,” explained Chief Lawyer. “And now, this (the toy drive) was added to the mix. Normally, the fire department provides a free picture with Santa, cookies and deserts, and refreshments at the picture event, and all the children receive a free toy of their choice off the table. In previous years, the toys were donated by community members, organizations, and even purchased out of fire department members own pockets to ensure the children, especially the less fortunate, got to pick out a toy for Christmas.
“This year, with the help of a knowledgeable source within the community, the fire department was provided information on some struggling families within the area that had children and could use the extra cheer. This information was passed between The Caverns and Pelham Fire Department, and Santa was called on to help get the toys where they needed to go using Pelham fire trucks and The Caverns’ bus was used as a sleigh. The Ladies’ Auxiliary, Pelham firefighters, and folks from The Caverns fell in as Santa’s Elves.”
Big results
Over 14 local community children in five separate families received a special Christmas delivery. Santa greeted the children at their front doors with gifts, arriving with lights and sirens in a fire engine.
“The crews riding along and helping were astonished at the amazement and twinkle on the kids’ faces when Santa and his elves came in with boxes of toys. It was definitely a priceless experience that none of us will ever forget,” said Lawyer.
Added to this, the Ladies’ Auxiliary and others community members assisted in donations and were able to get new clothes for the children of the families as well.
Once back at the Pelham Fire Station, everyone waited for the “Pictures with Santa” to kick off. This event was another great success with over 50 children coming out for a picture with Santa and receiving gifts.
“This entire day was a blessing for so many families. It was an awesome show of community support from The Caverns, and it is a great thing to have such caring people within our community and county.
“Next year, after talking to Todd and Justin with the Caverns, we are going to plan a bigger event,” concluded Lawyer.
