Sgt. Tom Burnette (left) and Sgt. Billy Carl Guffey wore their Army uniforms to church on Memorial Day weekend in honor of those whose lives were lost in the cause of freedom. Burnette, 71, served in Vietnam during the Vietnam War and was discharged in 1968. He has been a member of VVA (Vietnam Veterans of America) for a number of years. Guffey, 82, served in West Germany during the Cold War nuclear standoff with the Soviet Union. He was discharged in 1963. “These two patriots are former recipients of the Palmer Veterans Appreciation Award, so I am not surprised that they would go the extra mile,” says Palmer Town Historian David Patton. “Patriotism is at a fever pitch in Grundy County, and few places can match the respect and love shown to our local veterans.”
