Softball season ended Monday night in Smithville as the Lady Jackets fell to DeKalb County in the opening game of the region tournament. The Lady Jackets ended their season with a 15-11
“You’re never really ready for the season to end, but we didn’t hit well enough on Monday to win. Our hitting and defense both improved a great deal this year, the offense just wasn’t there on that night. I give Dekalb a lot of credit, they are a strong team with rich tradition. You have to bring your A-game to come out of there with a win. But it’s been a great season. We didn’t get as far in the post-season as we had hoped, but to see where this team started and where it is now, I couldn’t be more proud. These seniors went from a 2 win season as freshmen, to a regular season district title and region tournament appearance as seniors. That is just a small testament of the work these girls have put in to our program and the foundation that was laid by the past 2 senior classes. Each year we hope that our team will raise the bar for softball in Grundy County. This team accomplished that feat. We will really miss Harley and Chelby on the field with us next year, but we know they won’t be strangers to the program. I know they will be at every game their college schedules will allow them to attend. Now we look to next season. We will be having tryouts somewhere around the 1st week in June and will start work on raising the bar a few more levels. Thank you to all the individuals and businesses that contributed to our program this year. We couldn’t have had the season we did without their support,” said Coach Jason Evans.
Two errors in one inning proved to be the downfall for the Lady Jackets as DeKalb scored six runs in the 3rd off those errors to take a 6-0 lead. Grundy’s lone run came in the 5th. Makayla Nunley suffered the loss on the mound striking out two.
Madison Burrows led at the plate going 1 for 3 with a double and a RBI. Chloe Scissom was also 1 for 3 with a double. Harley Davis hit 1 for 2. Sierra Kilgore hit 1 for 3. Madison Rogers reached on an error and scored a run.
