Students at Grundy County High School experienced real life responsibilities in November. Ninth graders took part in a “reality store” offering the students the opportunity to budget their money. Each student was given a monthly income based on their current career and college choice and visited a variety of booths where they were required to pay bills and manage their expenses. Booths were manned by community members and represented expenses such as utilities, housing, food, clothing, child care, vehicles, insurance, and medical expenses.
The students enjoyed replicating adult responsibilities that included working to earn an income, and were able to identify key choices in their lives that will impact the quality of their real-life experiences in the future,.
The reality store was made possible by a TnAche grant, applied for by Jessie Kinsey, aimed at encouraging college and career readiness skills among high school students.
The school wishes to thank the following community members for volunteering their time: Kay Layne, METS Program; Chasity Melton, Grundy County Anti-Drug Coalition; Janie Layne and Haskel Meadows, school board members; Susan Johnson, Discover Together; Will Merrell and Sam Hutchinson, Grundy EMS; Christel Shrum, Citizen’s Tri-County Bank; Sam Myers, SVEC; and Keith McBee and Emily Partin, Family Resource Center.
