The Grundy County Yellow Jacket 2019 football season got off to a rough start last Friday night in a 55 – 0 loss to the South Pittsburg Pirates at home. Tomorrow night (Friday) the Jackets, once again, play at home. This time, they host the York Agricultural Institute Dragons from Jamestown. The game with the Dragons is the Region 4 3A opener for both teams. Game time is 7 p.m.
Last Friday night, the Jackets were overwhelmed by one of the best teams in the state in Class 1A. The Pirates, who are perennial powers in their class, used a dominating defense and a powerful running game to shutout the Jackets. It was the second victory in as many games for the Pirates, while the Jackets dropped their first contest of the season.
The Pirates scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and added four more TD’s in the second stanza to invoke the mercy rule for the second half with a 42 – 0 lead at intermission.
The Jackets were held to 39 yards rushing on 22 carries, while they could only come up with 38 more yards through the air on a 10 – 19 – 0 night. The Jackets had only one turnover, which is encouraging. They punted seven times for a 29-yard average. They committed nine penalties for 65 yards. The Jackets forced one turnover by the Pirates, which was a fumble.
Tomorrow night, the Dragons come to town for the first region game for both teams. The Dragons are 1 – 1 on the season after defeating Jackson County 26 – 14 in Week 1. The Dragons were also shutout last week as Oneida defeated York 33 – 0. The Dragons defeated the Jackets last year 49 – 14 in Jamestown.
Hopefully, the Jackets can regroup and get ready to take the fight to their opponents from the Upper Cumberland. Once again, minimizing mistakes and playing sound fundamental football will be key to defeat the Dragons.
