Palmer Elementary School turns 89 on November 14. These six ladies in the 1996 reunion picture all graduated in the 1930s, when the school was called Palmer Grammar School. Pictured at the reunion are Becky Hampton and her sister Martha Hampton, Dola Ivey Rector and her sister Becky Ivey Teague, and Dorothy Foster Schaerer.

PES 89 1To our knowledge, all are deceased except for the Ivey sisters. Martha Hampton was a beloved teacher at the school for many years before taking an administrative position at Middle Tennessee State University. Schaerer was a longtime teacher at Grundy County High School in Tracy City. She was the aunt of Bobby Foster, current chairperson of the Grundy County School Board.

Also pictured is Oscar Howell James. Known to everyone as “Harold” James, he is pictured in the 1941-1942 school year. James was named for the beloved angel of mercy, Dr. Oscar Howell Clements, who was Palmer’s town doctor in the hard days of the Great Depression and World War II.

James is a very good-hearted and generous person and we always enjoy visiting with him. He is the father-in-law of Grundy County Sheriff Clint Shrum.
