Quietly meeting for almost a year, the Grundy County Fair Association announced last week that residents could expect to see the return of the fair next fall. Association president Tabitha Meeks says the fair will be held at the Gruetli-Laager City Park, and while a specific date has not been nailed down, organizers are looking at several different months.
“The only date I can give you right now is 2016,” said Meeks.
Fairgoers will enjoy all the traditions of a county festival.
“We are not just trying to bring back a fair,” explained Meeks. “We want to bring a fair back to the county that incorporates family, community, and the basics that county fairs originally brought to communities.
“For example, I was a board member the last five years during the county fair’s last run – ten years ago. We did not have the facilities or community involvement that were needed to establish a successful fair.”
Meeks says limited community involvement and space issues led to fewer exhibits, food, and entertainment.
The Grundy County Fair Association hopes to bring all the basics of the fair, and more, back to the mountain.
“We want to showcase the talent of Grundy County citizens – their talents in gardening, sewing, quilting, culinary skills, husbandry, art, photography, and so much more.”
Recently, the County Commission announced their support, anchored by Grundy County Mayor Michael Brady.
“Scotty Hoosier has been trying to get this on its way for a while now, and once the commission gave us their support we have been able to get some things done.”
Gruetli-Laager Mayor Kelly Gibbs is pleased his town was chosen to host the fair. “On behalf of the City of Gruetli-Laager, we are honored that the Grundy County Fair Association chose Gruetli-Laager as the venue for the 2016 Grundy County Fair. We are excited about being asked to host the 2016 Grundy County Fair and look forward to working with the people of Grundy County and the Grundy County Fair Association to ensure that the 2016 Grundy County Fair is the absolute best that it can possibly be!”
The association lists the following members: President, Tabitha Meeks; Vice-President, Scotty Hoosier; Secretary/Treasurer, Misty Nunley; and Trustees Carlton Parmley and Pattie Doss.
The next meeting for the association is set for Thursday, August 27, at 6 p.m. at the Gruetli-Laager Fire Hall. . This will be a workshop meeting with the association and the Gruetli-Laager City Council.
