What began as lunch with co-workers on Friday turned into a lifesaving mission when a man at a nearby table began choking.

Grundy County Sheriff’s Department employees Linda Crosslin, Mark Nunley, Whitney Miller, and Clark Weatherford were enjoying lunch at Simply Southern in Pelham when they noticed a commotion at a nearby table.

Clark WeatherfordWeatherford, nurse at the Grundy County Jail, realized an elderly man, identified as Sherman Layne, was choking on his food and jumped into action. He performed the Heimlich maneuver on the victim, who continued to choke. Recognizing the Heimlich maneuver was not working, Weatherford pulled the man from his chair and laid him on his side on the floor. He then reached down the man’s throat and manually removed the food.

By the time the ambulance arrived, Layne was sitting up in his chair. He was checked out by emergency workers, but did not require transport to a hospital.

Crosslin said Weatherford has been with the Sheriff’s Office for two weeks. And, it was fortunate they were at the restaurant on Friday.

“The good Lord put us in the right place at the right time,” said Crosslin.
