A Grundy County teen, Hunter Northcutt, who passed away in Sept. 18, 2017, of acute leukemia, was awarded posthumously the title of Honorary Marine June 13, at Pelham Elementary School. The designation is a special distinction to those who earn it.
At the time of Northcutt’s death, he was in line to carry on the family tradition of being a United States Marine. This tradition began with his grandfather, who was then followed by his uncle and is being continued on today by his cousin.
His terminal leukemia ended his life while in the initial nomination process for Honorary Marine.
Prior to his diagnosis, Northcutt was an avid fisherman, basketball player and honor roll student. He embodied the Marine’s core values of honor, courage and commitment. During his cancer treatments, he shifted his attention from himself and displayed the fighting spirit of a Marine by helping and inspiring other patients to fight and never give up.
Northcutt requested to be buried in a Marine Corps themed casket.
