The first round of opioid settlement payments is being distributed to local governments across Tennessee.
Grundy County government is slated to receive $84,137 from multi-million dollar opioid lawsuit settlement proceeds.
An announcement by the Tennessee’s Opioid Abatement Council is that these funds are the first round of direct payments to county governments across the state. More than $31.4 million will be distributed from lawsuit settlement proceeds.
“The question is: how do you disperse it,” stated Grundy County Mayor Michael Brady. “I assume that’s under my control, but I don’t want it to be under my control. What I want is for all the local recovery folks to get together as a group and form a coalition. The coalition can determine an initiative. The county can then fund the initiative using settlement funds.”
According to the state, county leaders are able to decide. However, the select activity must be from a list approved by the Tennessee Opioid Abatement Council in September 2022. Approved uses include a continuum of opioid use disorder treatment programs, medication assisted treatment, recovery supports, and prevention measures, etc.
Payments from these settlements, while not as large as this initial payment, will continue annually for 18 years.
Tennessee's Opioid Abatement Council was created by the Tennessee General Assembly in Public Chapter 491 to manage the disbursement of proceeds from lawsuits relating to opioids.
