Original report

Grundy County Sheriff Clint Shrum has reported that four people have been shot in Altamont, with one fatality.

A scene turned domestic when John Wesley Smith entered the Powell residence in Altamont where his wife, Nicole Powell, her children, her father Jorone Powell, and another man were at home.  His wife and the unidentified man attempted to leave the home and were shot by the husband. The woman’s father shot at and hit the husband, keeping him from continuing to fire, however the father was also shot.

Michelle Lewis, a close family friend, told the Herald that Smith did not walk in and “find his wife with another man.”

“This is a tragic domestic dispute,” said Lewis. “What he has done is absolutely tragic.”

Nicole Powell, 32, has passed away from her injuries.

The Sheriff says they are continuing to work the scene and have called in the TBI for assistance.
