Updated 9.24.18 9:30 a.m.: The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office has identified the third victim in the overnight shooting in Altamont, as Christopher Gary Hurst (38) from Bridgeport, Alabama. Hurst is an acquaintance of the decedent Carloyn Nicole Powell (32).
Sheriff Shrum stated Hurst and Jerone Powell have undergone surgery at area hospitals. Powell is in critical condition. The suspect, John Wesley Smith, is also hospitalized in fair condition.
Shrum also reports there were six children inside the residence when the incidence occurred.
Updated 9.24.18 7:38 a.m.: The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office has issued the following statement on Sunday’s fatal shooting in Altamont –
“Sheriff Clint Shrum confirms that deputies responded to 12466 SR 56 in Altamont, where four people were reported shot and the shooter was still on the scene. When deputies arrived they immediately took John Wesley Smith (37) into custody. Emergency medical services were called for the victims which included homeowner Jerone Powell (50) and the shooter’s wife Carolyn Nicole Powell (32). She was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Another male had also been shot but cannot be identified pending notification of the family.
“The shooter and the two male victims were transported to area hospitals.
“Sheriff Shrum says it appears to be a domestic related incident between the shooter, his wife Nicole Powell, and the unidentified victim.
“Smith is from Marion County and has a lengthly criminal history. Sheriff Shrum has requested assistance from the District Attorney’s Office and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.”
Updated 6:13 p.m.: The names of three shooting victims have been released. The deceased is Nicole Powell, 32, of Altamont. She was shot by John W. Smith, 38, of Jasper. He was shot in the head by Nicole Powell’s father and is critical condition.
Smith shot another man in the home whose name has not been released pending notification of family members.
Nicole Powell’s father, Jerone Powell was also shot by Smith and is in the hospital.
A scene turned domestic when John Wesley Smith entered the Powell residence in Altamont where his wife, Nicole Powell, her children, her father Jorone Powell, and another man were at home. His wife and the unidentified man attempted to leave the home and were shot by the husband. The woman’s father shot at and hit the husband, keeping him from continuing to fire, however the father was also shot.
Michelle Lewis, a close family friend, told the Herald that Smith did not walk in and “find his wife with another man.”
“This is a tragic domestic dispute,” said Lewis. “What he has done is absolutely tragic.”
Nicole Powell, 32, has passed away from her injuries.
The Sheriff says they are continuing to work the scene and have called in the TBI for assistance.
