The St. Andrews-Sewanee Mountain Lions traveled to Bowling Green, Kentucky, to open up their season Saturday against Bowling Green Christian Academy. The Mountain Lions rallied in the fourth quarter to win 26-19.
The Mountain Lions wasted little time as they took the opening kickoff and moved 65 yards in 10 plays to take the lead. Senior Dustin Stensby walked into the end zone from six yards out and junior Gabriel Stevens added the PAT for a 7-0 lead with 5:49 left in the first quarter. SAS stretched their lead to 19-6 when Stensby returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown. Once again, the extra point boot was no good. BGCA stormed back with a 45-yard touchdown pass and a successful PTA kick and cut the deficit to 19-13 after three quarters.
BGCA tied the game with 3:47 to go in the contest with a 20-yard run for a touchdown. The PAT kick failed and the game was tied 19-19. SAS scored 70 seconds later as Thombs raised into the end zone from 20 yards. Stevens added the PAT kick and the Mountain Lions led 26-19 with 2:37 left in the game. The defense kept their host out of the end zone and SAS secured the season opening win.
Offensively, Stensby carried the ball 26 times for 139 yards and an offensive touchdown. He was one for 2 through the air for 25 yards. Thombs added 97 yards on 11 totes.
