The St. Andrews – Sewanee Mountain Lions football season opened last Thursday night, at Riverside Christian Academy in Fayetteville, with a 32 – 18 loss. The Mountain Lions play their home opener tomorrow (Friday), at 4 p.m., against Franklin Christian Academy.
The Mountain Lions scored first when freshman Deandre Tate sprinted 68 yards to the end zone with 4:00 remaining in the opening quarter. The PAT was no good and the Mountain Lions led 6 – 0 after one quarter.
The second quarter belonged to the hosts as RCA scored three times to take an 18 – 6 lead into intermission. The scores came on two pass plays and a 56 yard punt return.
RCA came out in the third quarter and added two more touchdowns. The Mountain Lions also added two touchdowns as well. Another freshman Baylor Metcalf scored on a 43-yard jaunt and Tate added a 11 yard run to end the scoring on the night. Both PATs failed.
The young Mountain Lions were led in rushing by the two freshmen backs. RB Tate had 82 yards in four carries, while QB Metcalf had 56 yards on 14 carries. Ben Matthews caught two passes from Metcalf for 31 yards.
Defensively, Tate led the charge with eight tack-les. Junior Cailan McLean added seven stops.
The Mountain Lions are young this year and the fu-ture looks bright with the youth that played pivotal roles on the team last Thursday.
Tomorrow afternoon (Friday) SAS fans need to get to the game and support these young men.
