The St. Andrews – Sewanee Mountain Lion football team dropped their third game of the year last Saturday, when they lost to Bowling Green Christian Academy 20 – 17. The game was played on the campus of St. Andrews – Sewanee.
The Mountain Lions scored first when Gabriel Stevens sprinted 63-yards for a touchdown with 1:39 left in the first quarter. Stevens added the PAT kick and the hosts led 7 -0.
BGCA got on the scoreboard in the second quarter with a one-yard plunge at the 4:31 mark of the second stanza. The PAT boot was good and the two teams went to the locker room knotted at 7 – 7.
SAS scored first in the third quarter when Stevens connected on a 37-yard field goal with 7:11 left in the quarter. BGCA countered at the 2:35 mark with a 15-yard touchdown dash and the PAT kick and the visitors led 14 – 10 after three quarters.
BGCA extended their lead to 20 – 10 with 61-yard scamper to pay dirt with 4:57 remaining in the game. The PAT kick failed. The visitors were trying to put the game away when big senior defensive lineman Jalen Tillman scooped up a fumble by BGCA and rumbled 41-yards to the end zone. Stevens PAT got the Mountain Lions as close as they would be at 20 – 17.
SAS wasn’t able to score again and went on to drop their record to 0 – 3 on the season. The Mountain Lions were led offensively by Stevens who rushed for 119-yards on 21 carries. Senior Ben Matthews added 76 yards on eight carries. Freshman Deandre Tate caught three passes for 74 yards.
Defensively, Tate made 16 tackles to lead the charge. Junior Cailan McLean and Matthews had seven stops each. Seniors Larson Heitzenrater and Jarett Willis had six tackles each. Tillman had the fumble recovery, while freshman Baylor Metcalf and an interception.
