As part of the Mountain Homecoming on Saturday, October 4, the Town of Monteagle unveiled a plaster cast of its eagle. The original eagle was spirited away by Tennessee Tech students on a dark and stormy night in 1952. Dr. Michael Birdwell, a history professor at Tennessee Tech, related the story of freshman Tom Moran and his friends taking the eagle before Tech’s big game against MTSU prior to the unveiling. The Laurel Lake Garden Club started the drive to bring the eagle back to the mountain and a metal eagle will soon be placed at the spot where Moran and his friends “lifted” the original Monteagle eagle.
