This time of year may be the busiest for Billy Moon, the Transportation Supervisor for Grundy County Schools. Luckily, he took time to tell us about growing up on the mountain and why he loves his job.

Billy was born in Chattanooga to Bill and Shirley Moon. He attended grammar school at Monteagle Elementary School and played baseball and football.

NOW Billy Moon“I went to St. Andrews-Sewanee for high school,” says Billy. “I played baseball and football while I was there.

“After graduation, I attended Chattanooga State, receiving my Associate’s Degree in Diesel Equipment Management. At Chatt State, I made the National Dean’s List and Who’s Who Among Students.”

After graduating college, Billy went to work for his dad.

“In 1991, I began working for Gilbert Hardwood Centers in Huntland. I was there for 18 years before moving to my current job with Grundy County Schools as Transportation Supervisor.

“My favorite thing about my job – well, it is hard to name one thing. The people I work with are wonderful, and I enjoy the satisfaction of coordinating the transportation of our students safely every day.

“One of my greatest pleasures has been getting to see parts of Grundy County that I otherwise would never have seen if it wasn’t for this job.”

Billy is not married, nor does he have children. However, he says he “has about 1,000 students each day that are my responsibility.”

In his free time, Billy enjoys watching NASCAR racing and football, playing golf, and spending time with family and friends.

“What would surprise people about me? Probably how dedicated and determined I am. Although I don’t always show it, I am a very caring and supportive person.”
