Literacy Matters

The first meeting of the GMS Tri-County Literacy Chapter was held on April 2, at Swiss Memorial Elementary School. The chapter is associated with the Literacy Association of Tennessee and the International Literacy Association. The meeting was held to elect new officers and focus on discussion and best strategies on how to promote literacy in Grundy, Marion and Sequatchie counties. Guest speakers included Melanie Collins, the Middle Tennessee District Coordinator of the Literacy Association of Tennessee; and Sharon Shadrick, who spoke to the attendees about the Young Writers Club that she offers to students at Sequatchie County Middle School. Officers elected were as follows: Sandra Crabtree, Director of Membership; Nicole Sweeney, Secretary; Sharon Shadrick, Chair-Elect; Dr. Jennifer Webb, Treasurer; and Lisa Troglin, Chair. The chapter’s next meeting will be on May 7, at 4 p.m., at Monteagle Elementary School. Anyone interested in learning about literacy is invited.
