Lady Jackets Win First Two Games, Drop District Opener

The Grundy County Lady Jacket softball team garnered their first two wins of the 2017 season during the Lookout Valley Invitational last weekend. The team defeated Chattanooga Arts and Sciences 10 – 3 last Thursday. They defeated Notre Dame 20 – 2 on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Lady Jackets dropped decisions to South Pittsburg 10 – 9 and Lookout Valley 3 – 2 in the Invitational.

Last Wednesday the Lady Jackets lost their home opener to the Lady Tigers from Whitwell 8 – 3. Friday night the Lady Jackets lost their district opener at home to Bledsoe County 7 – 2. The Lady Jackets are 2 – 6 on the season and 0 – 1 in District 7-AA. The team is off until Monday when they host Moore County at 6 p.m.  Tuesday, at 5:30 p.m., the team travels to Chattanooga to face Notre Dame in a District 7-AA contest.

Whitwell 10 Lady Jackets 3

The Lady Jackets spotted the Lady Tigers two unearned runs in the first two innings before rallying to take a 3 – 2 lead after four innings on a two run triple by Emilee Meeks and a run scoring single by Kristin Weaver. However, the Lady Tigers bats came alive to score 8 runs in the sixth and seventh innings to put the game away. Meleah Stevens went 3 – 4 with a run scored. Teah Bosio added a single and a run while Kara Meeks and Liz Morgan each had a double.

Lady Jackets 10 CSAS 3

The Lady Jackets secured their first victory of the season with the 10 – 3 win against the Lady Patriots. Bosio went 2 – 2 and scored three runs. Stevens went 2 – 3 and scored two runs. Emilee Meeks was 1 – 1 with a home run, two runs scored, and three RBIs. Kristin Weaver went 2 – 3 with a double and three RBIs. Kristin Stiefel was 1 – 2 with an rbi. Bailee Sweeton was the winning pitcher.

South Pittsburg 10 Lady Jackets 9

The Lady Pirates scored four runs in the top of the second to take a four run lead. The Lady

Jackets answered with three runs in the third. The Lady Pirates scored two runs in the final

three innings, while the Lady Jackets scored six runs themselves in the final two innings. Bosio was 3 – 3 with a double and two runs. Emilee Meeks went 2 – 4 with a homer, two runs scored, and three RBIs. Liz Morgan was 2 – 3 with a triple, a run scored, and an rbi.

Bledsoe County 7 Lady Jackets 2

The Lady Warriors scored five runs in the fourth inning to take control of the District 7-AA game. The Lady Jackets led 2 – 1 heading to the fourth before the Lady Warriors big inning. Emilee Meeks and Stevens were 2 – 3.

Lady Jackets 20 Notre Dame 2

The Lady Jackets scored two runs in the first inning and six runs in the second and then exploded for 12 runs in the third to put the game away. The win was the second on the season and in the Invitational. Emilee Meeks led the offensive attack with a 3 – 3 performance at the plate with three runs scored and five RBIs. Emma Seagroves, Morgan and Stevens all went 2 -4. Seagroves had a double and scored two runs. Morgan had a triple, scored two runs, and had three RBIs. Stevens scored two runs and added an rbi. Kara Meeks was 1 – 1 with two walks, three runs scored, and an rbi. Sweeton garnered her second win in the pitcher’s circle.

Lookout Valley 3 Lady Jackets 2

The Lady Jackets of Lookout Valley scored a run in the last inning to take the 3 – 2 victory. Bosio, Stevens, and Sweeton had base hits for the Lady Jackets. Makayla Nunley was the tough luck losing pitcher.
