Lady Jackets Win 2, Men Win 1

Posted on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at 1:04 pm

Grundy basketball got in four games each since Christmas, playing in the South Pittsburg tournament and hosting Coffee County Saturday. The Lady Jackets notched two wins while the Jacket men got one.

The Lady Jackets moved to 6-10 overall and remain 1-1 in district play. The men are now 3-13 and 0-2 in the district.

Coach Jonathan Shedd reflected on the week.

bg“Against North Sand Mountain, we just plugged away. I believe they were up 12 with about four minutes to go in the game. We never led the entire game. We kept struggling and fighting we got it tied up and we led when the horn went off. It was a big win. We played as a group. MiKayla led us in scoring in the first half, and Madison handled it in the second half and she hit the game winner. She had 22 all in the second half.

“When we played Moore County it was ugly both ways. It was very, very physical. It was just rough. There’s really no other way to put it. It was just a very rough game. The physicalness (sic) got to us and got in our heads.

“Against Lewis County we beat ourselves. We lost by 10, we committed 26 turnovers, missed 14 layups, and missed 13 free throws. So, you lose by 10, but we were right there at it. You can’t let that much go and give that much away. If we would have hit half the layups or half the free throws, we win.”

Coach Jerry Brown talked about the South Pittsburg tournament.

“I thought we learned in the tournament that we have to learn how to finish games. North Sand bbMountain – we were only down two at half and we let them go on a 10-0 run. That was basically the difference.

“Against Moore County, we were up 20-plus points going into the fourth quarter, and Moore was able to cut that lead down to six points. That was a different way of learning how to finish.

“Against Lewis County, we were up four with 20 seconds left to go in the game and we ended up losing. So it’s different ways of finishing and different ways of not letting being comfortable and not letting teams do what they want to do,” said the coach.

Grundy played at Whitwell Tuesday. Friday they host Chattanooga Christian at 6 p.m. Tuesday they host Bledsoe County also at 6 p.m. Get out and support Grundy basketball this week!

Girls

Grundy 49 – North Sand Mountain 47

Grundy trailed through the first three quarters. Down 33-27 going into the fourth, they needed to turn up the heat. Madison Burrows caught fire in the fourth quarter hitting four threes and scoring 14 of Grundy’s 22 points to lead Grundy to the win.

Madison Burrows was red hot and lead Grundy with 22 points including five three pointers. MiKayla Williams followed with 14. Teah Bosio notched seven points. Lacy Nunley added four and Haylee Northcutt scored two.

Moore Co. 69 – Grundy 48

The Lady Jackets got down 18-5 after one quarter and tried to battle back all night. They cut lead by three by halftime but got outscored 43-32 in the second half to suffer the loss.

Teah Bosio led Grundy in scoring with 11 points. Madison Burrows followed with 10 hitting a three. Lacy Nunley scored nine. MiKayla Williams notched seven with a three. Haylee Northcutt scored five with a three. Hanna Tate, Keely Reese and Kylan Layne Pickett scored two points each.

Lewis Co. 67 – Grundy 57

Leading by one after one quarter, the Lady Jackets struggled with a second quarter letdown. Lewis County bested the locals 21-10 in the quarter and added seven points to that lead by the end of the third. Grundy’s 22-15 fourth quarter just wasn’t enough.

MiKayla Williams led the Lady Jackets with 19 including five three pointers. Teah Bosio followed with 14 with a three. Lacy Nunley was in double digits with 10 points. Haylee Northcutt tossed in nine. Madison Burrows scored three and Kylan Layne Pickett scored two.

Grundy 62 – Coffee Co. 56

Tied 15-15 after one the Lady Jackets posted a 16-10 second quarter to take the lead to the half. Those six points ended up being the difference as the teams posted a 31-31 second half.

“Tonight we’ve got several sick and several stepped up. Teah’s game was cut short because of foul trouble but when she was on she was on. MiKayla stepped up when she went out because Madison is sick. We’ve had a lot to fight through as a group and we’ve been fighting. We’re 2-2 going back into school and these games,” said Shedd.

MiKayla Williams led the Lady Jackets again with 25 points including three from three-point land. Teah Bosio followed with 13 including a three. Madison Burrows scored nine. Kylan Layne Pickett followed with six. Kristin Weaver scored five and Lacy Nunley added four.

Boys

North Sand Mountain 78 – Grundy 62

Both offenses were explosive in the first half with North Sand Mountain leading 41-39 at the break. Grundy’s offense wasn’t as productive in the second half and a 21-9 third quarter pretty much put the game out of reach for the Jackets.

Trey Hampton led Grundy with 22 points including five three pointers. Boo Goins followed notching 18 points with two threes. Blane Harris scored nine. Johnny Adkins had five with a three. Kollyn Cooper and Josh Nance scored four points each.

Grundy 73 – Moore Co. 65

The Jackets got their third win of the season playing a strong first three quarters against Moore County. Grundy posted 21-11, 18-18, and 22-11 quarters to lead 61-40 going into the final quarter. The Jackets held off a Raider rally to take the win.

Trey Hampton led again with 30 points hitting five threes for the second game in a row. Kenzie Hill followed with nine with two threes. Blane Harris and Kollyn Cooper notched eight points each with Cooper hitting a three. Corbin Lusk and Johnny Adkins added four points each.

Lewis Co. 57 – Grundy 56

Nip and tuck, back and forth, and all those other clichés describe this one as Grundy and Lewis County battled close in their final game in the South Pittsburg tournament. Grundy led by one after one and trailed by one at the half. They were down by two going into the final quarter but led by four with just 20 seconds left. It wasn’t meant to be, as Lewis County found a way to win.

Trey Hampton continued to lead with 25 points and again five threes. Kollyn Cooper notched 11 with two threes. Blane Harris had 10 with two threes. Josh Nance scored four. Johnny Adkins and Boo Goins hit three pointers.

Coffee Co. 57 – Grundy 38

The Jackets did not play well in the first half and trailed 29-12 at the break. Down by 23 going into the final quarter, Grundy tried to mount a comeback but just couldn’t gain ground on the Raiders.

“Tonight was pretty simple. They jumped on us from the get go. We were lackadaisical. We were sluggish. I don’t understand why we were but we were and that’s what happens when you dig big holes like that. Teams are not going to let you come back from them. I thought in the second half my kids gave tremendous effort. They tried to battle back but Coffee County is a well-coached team and therefore they’re not going to let us come back from that big of a hole,” said Coach Brown.

Kollyn Cooper led Grundy in this one with 11 points including three from three-point land. Blane Harris and Josh Nance had six each with Harris getting his on three pointers. Trey Hampton scored five with a three. Boo Goins had four. Johnny Adkins hit a three pointer. Corbin Lusk scored two points and Kenzie Hill one.
