Lady Jackets Split with Van Buren; Drop Distict Game

The Grundy County Lady Jackets lost their third District 7 AA games in as many decisions on the season against Sequatchie County at home last Tuesday night. It was also their third loss in a row on the season. Last Thursday, the Lady Jackets traveled to Spencer and battled the Lady Eagles of Van Buren in two five inning contests. The Lady Jackets took Game 1 in four innings 15 – 4, before dropping the nightcap 9 – 2. The Lady Jackets home contest last Monday against Huntland was postponed due to inclement weather and hasn’t been rescheduled as of yet.
The Lady Jackets traveled to Jasper Tuesday night to take on the Marion County Lady Warriors in another district game. Yesterday (Wednesday), they hosted Moore County. The Lady Jackets play Cumberland County next Tuesday, at 5 p.m., at home. On Wednesday, the Lady Jackets will entertain the Lady Tigers of Whitwell at 1 p.m., in front of the student body. The Lady Jackets are 2 – 5 on the regular season and 0 – 3 in district play.

District frontrunner Sequatchie County defeated the Lady Jackets 15 – 0 last Tuesday night at GCHS. Emma Seagroves managed a double for the Lady Jackets only hit.

The Lady Jackets scored five runs in the first and third innings, added four runs in the second inning and scored a single run in the fourth to end their three game losing skid. Senior first baseman Emily Rhea went 4 – 4 with a double and scored three runs. Junior catcher Emma Seagroves had a triple and two runs scored. Senior third baseman Meleah Stevens had two triples and a run scored. Sophomore Katie Brown had two hits including a triple. Senior Morgan Mooney scored two runs, as did sophomore Jeresha Meeks. Freshman Lacie Woodlee pitched for the Lady Jackets and got the win.

The Lady Jackets needed some of their runs and hits from the first game in the nightcap as the Lady Eagles gained the split with a 9 – 2 decision. Destiny Stevens had a triple and scored a run, while Seagroves had a hit and Mooney scored the other run in the loss.
