The Grundy County Lady Yellow Jacket softball team played a couple of games last week during spring break and lost both of them. The Lady Jackets played the Lady Tigers of Whitwell last Wednesday in front of their student body and dropped a 12 – 0 decision. On Thursday, the Lady Jackets made the long trip to Crossville and lost their second district game in as many decisions, as they lost to the Lady Jets of Cumberland County 10 – 6.
The Lady Jackets are 1 – 3 on the young season and 0 – 2 in District 7 AA play. They were set to play Huntland at home on Monday, barring inclement weather that was predicted. On Tuesday, they were to play District 7 AA rival Sequatchie County at home. Tonight (Thursday) the Lady Jackets are set to travel to Spencer to take on the Van Buren County Lady Eagles in a double-header. The first game is set for 5:00 pm.
Next week, the Lady Jackets will play at Marion County on Tuesday, April 1, at 5 p.m. This is another District 7 AA clash. On Wednesday, April 3, the Lady Raiders of Moore County will come to Grundy County for a 4 p.m. start.
Whitwell 12 Lady Jackets 0
The Lady Tigers, who are one of the top softball programs in Class A, used a seven run fourth inning to end the game 12 – 0 in four innings last Wednesday. The Lady Jackets managed one hit by senior Emily Rhea, but was battling in a 5 – 0 deficit before the decisive fourth inning.
Cumberland County 10 Lady Jackets 6
Another seven run inning was the downfall of the Lady Jackets. The Lady Jets plated seven runs in the second inning and held off a late rally by the Lady Jackets to secure the district win 10 – 6. Senior pitcher Meleah Stevens scored three runs on the offensive side of things for the Lady Jackets. Junior catcher Emma Seagroves was 4 – 4 at the plate with a double. She also drove in three runs and scored another run. Senior Morgan Mooney added three hits. Rhea had a single. Freshman Jenna Helton had a single and an rbi. Junior Jadan Campbell added a single, an rbi, and a run scored. Sophomore Destiny Stevens had a single and a run scored.
