The Grundy County Lady Yellow Jacket softball team opened the 2019 season last Tuesday night, at home, against District 7 AA rival Bledsoe County. The Lady Jackets dropped a 10 – 6 decision to the Lady Warriors. The Lady Jackets rebounded in a big way on Wednesday afternoon as they routed the Lady Hawks of Richard Hardy 20 – 3 in three innings.
The Lady Jackets home district contest with Marion County was postponed because of impending inclement weather last Thursday. The Lady Jackets traveled to Whitwell yesterday to battle the Lady Tigers. Today (Thursday), they traveled to Crossville to play the Lady Jets of Cumberland County in another District 7 AA game at 5 p.m. The Lady Jackets will host the Lady Hornets of Huntland at 5 p.m., on Monday. Tuesday night of next week they will host the Lady Indians of Sequatchie County at 5 p.m.

The Lady Jackets scored two runs in the bottom of the second to take a short-lived 2 – 0 lead. After the Lady Warriors scored a run in the third and four in the fourth, the Lady Jackets tried to play catch up the remainder of the game. Sophomore pitcher McKenzie Broadway had a good day at the plate going 3 – 3. Courtesy runner Jadan Campbell scored three runs as she ran for Broadway. Sophomore shortstop Jeresha Meeks added two hits including a triple and scored two runs. Senior Morgan Mooney added two more hits including a double and four RBIs. Junior catcher Emma Seagroves added a double and an rbi. One of Broadway’s three hits was a double.

The Lady Jackets scored 10 runs in the first and second innings to rout the young Lady Hawks. Seniors Meleah Stevens, Emily Rhea, and Hanna Tate scored two runs each. Tate also had a triple. Head coach Jason Evans was able to use the whole roster in the victory.
