The Grundy County Lady Yellow Jackets won their second game of the 2019 – 20 season last Friday night, before a large crowd at “Ricky Richards Gym,” on the GCHS campus with a 59 – 34 victory over the Lady Champions of Cascade. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jacket basketball team made their debut with a fast and furious 60 – 59 victory over the Cascade Champions in the nightcap.
The teams traveled to Winchester, Tuesday night, to take on Franklin County in a doubleheader. Last night (Wednesday), the teams played in the Richard Hardy Thanksgiving Tournament in South Pittsburg. The Lady Jackets and Jackets return to the court tomorrow (Friday), in the Richard Hardy tournament. Yesterday (Wednesday), the Lady Jackets played Skyline, Alabama. The Yellow Jackets played Chattanooga How-ard yesterday as well. Tomorrow (Friday), the Jackets will play Ider, Alabama, at 11:30 a.m., and the Lady Jackets will play the Lady Chiefs of North Jackson, at 2:30 p.m. Next Monday night, the Lady Jackets and Jackets travel to Stevenson, Alabama to take on the Lady Chiefs and Chiefs with the girls’ game tipping off at 6 p.m.

The Lady Jackets of head coach Louie Ladd used an aggressive man defense and a balanced offense of both inside and outside play to pull away from the Lady Champions. The Lady Jackets outscored their guests 33 – 12 in the second and third quarter to help the hostesses pull away and secure their second win in as many games during the TSSAA Hall of Champion game week.
The balanced scoring attack was led by sophomores Abigail Childers (14) and Jordan McCullough (12) points. Senior Peyton Mainord added 10 points as 10 Lady Jackets in all hit the scoring column. They connected on four shots from behind the arc and was 11 – 21 from the charity stripe, an area I’m sure Coach Ladd would like to see improved upon.
The Lady Jackets weren’t real sharp with their passes, but obviously it’s early and there is always room for improvement. However, the team seemed to know where one another was and hustled from start to finish. Anytime you can start out 2 – 0 you can rest assured it’s a good start for your team.

The Grundy County Yellow Jackets made their season debut against the Champions and seemed a little anxious in the beginning as they fell behind 7 – 0 early. Nevertheless, their intensity level was at high speed from the start and they seized their first lead of the game with
4:41 to go before the half. The game seesawed back and forth with the Champions leading after the first and third quarters and the Jackets leading at intermission and the all-important final quarter.
The Jackets led 28 – 27 at the half and trailed 42 – 41 entering the final stanza. The Jackets overcame early foul trouble as starter seniors Nathan Coffelt and Chris Nance and junior Jaden Ruehling picked up three early fouls. Clutch three point shooting by senior Will Jackson and junior Jordan Hackworth kept the Jackets close until things could settle down. Hackworth with 10 points and Ruehling with seven points scored all but two points in the final quarter. After the Champions pulled within one point with :20.8 left the visitors called timeout. The Jackets came out and moved the ball down the court and they were able to pass the ball and avoid contact by the Champions who were attempting to foul to run out the clock.
Ruehling led a balanced attack with 17 markers, while Hackworth poured in 16 points. Junior big man Thaddaeus Blackburn added 10 points. The Jackets connected on eight three point shots and were 6 – 11 from the line. However, Hackworth and Ruehling hit two each in a clutch situation down the stretch.
