Grundy’s middle school football program picked up right where they left last season by notching another win, defeating Dayton City 16-0. The teams played to a scoreless first half but the Junior Jackets turned up the heat in the second half, posting the two scores for the win.
“We had a good start tonight. Our defense held Dayton scoreless and the defensive line came through several times to stop them from scoring. Our offense had a 99-yard drive to score. Brayden Sanders toughed it out and played hurt most of the second half. Jayden Ruehling came in late in the game to play quarterback and did a great job stepping up into that role. We had a lot of positives but there’s things we can work on to get better and we will,” complimented Coach Daryl Graham who leads the Junior Jackets this year.
Brayden Sanders put Grundy on the board first with a 27-yard touchdown run completing a 99-yard drive. Evan Nunley ran in the two-point conversion to put the Junior Jackets up 8-0. Nunley took care of the rest of the scoring with a four-yard TD run and the run for two to make the final 16-0 in favor of the locals.
At halftime of the contest the stadium at the old GCHS was dedicated Coach Chris Pickett Stadium. Several of Pickett’s former players, assistant coaches and friends were on hand as well as his wife, Joyce Pickett, Coach Pickett died of cancer in 2007 in the year of his return to coaching Grundy football. Pickett remains the winningest coach in Yellow Jacket history with 55-46 overall record. He was 53-38 in his first tenure from 1989-1996.
Brayden Sanders led the offense carrying the ball 11 times for 127 yards. Evan Nunley had 10 carries for 61 yards. Nathan Coffelt picked up 47 yards on seven totes. Jory Scissom made one return for 19 yards.
Cole Johnson led the defense with 13 total tackles. Nicky Johnson had 12 stops including a quarterback sack. Brayden Sanders made eight tackles. Evan Brady notched five stops. Jordan Hackworth had four tackles. Jayden Ruehling, Nathan Coffelt and Evan Nunley all had three tackles with Nunley intercepting a pass.
