The Junior Jackets gave fans plenty of excitement last week notching a two point win in overtime over the South Pittsburg Pirates. Grundy moved to 3-1 on the season with the win.
“This group showed they know how to fight to the end and win against a tough opponent tonight. I’m very proud of how they refused to lose this game. We still have room to get better but tonight was a great win for the team and the fans,” said Coach Daryl Graham.
South Pittsburg took charge of the contest early scoring on a 19-yard run in the first quarter. They couldn’t convert the extra point try but led 6-0. Midway through the second quarter the Pirates struck again on a 10-yard run. Their extra point try failed again but they had a 12-0 on the locals.
The Junior Jackets scored 1:13 later at the 4:40 mark of the second quarter when Brayden Sanders left everyone in his dust on a 38-yard touchdown run. Grundy’s run for two failed but they’d cut the lead to 12-6.
With 1:21 remaining in the half, Sanders hit Nathan Coffelt on a 31-yard touchdown pass to tie the game 12-12. Grundy’s run for two would fail.
The score remained 12-12 through the end of regulation play.
Grundy got the first try in overtime and would end up scoring on a 14-yard pass from Sanders to Coffelt. Sanders threw what would be the winning two-point conversion to Jaden Ruehling to put Grundy up 20-12.
The Pirates got their chance and scored on a four-yard run but got stopped short on the two point conversion run making the final 20-18.
Braden Sanders led the Grundy offense with 9 carries for 104 yards and a TD and completing 7 of 12 in passing for 111 yards and 2 TDs. He also had a 17-yard kickoff return. Nathan Coffelt made 7 carries for 20 yards and had 3 Receptions for 50 yards and 2 TDs. Jaden Ruehling had 3 totes for 4 yards, 3 receptions for 14 yards and the game wining catch for the two point conversion in overtime. He also had 2 punt returns for 8 yards and 1 kickoff return for 12 yards. Jory Scissom made one reception for 28 yards and a kickoff return for 8 yards.
On defense Elijah Scott led the way with 8 tackles and one tackle for a loss. Nicky Johnson and Brayden Sanders had 7 tackles and one for a loss each. Jory Scissom made 7 tackles. Jaden Ruehling and Nathan Coffelt had 5 tackles each. Jordan Hackworth notched 4 tackles with one for a loss. Tyler Andrews made 3 tackles and recovered a fumble. Peyton Nunley had 3 tackles. Braxton Norris and Cole Johnson had 2 tackles each.
The Junior Jackets host Jasper Thursday at 6 p.m.for 8th grade night at Coach Chris Pickett Stadium in Tracy City. Get out and support the Junior Jackets this week!
