The June Volunteer of the Month is Gene Richard of Coalmont.
His nomination reads in part:
“Richards is a great volunteer. He loves Grundy County, helping to form the Coalmont Fire Department in 1981 and serving as fire chief since 1983. Richards says he is going to ‘try to make another year to make 35 years of volunteer service to the department.’
He and others worked hard to be the first and only rural department in Grundy County to achieve a district wide class 6 ISO rating. They did this through their ability to supply water with tankers that include those from automatic aid departments (Altamont and Gruetli-Laager). He has advocated this for a number of years and when the resources became available in other towns, he and the other departments collectively accomplished what he had once thought to be impossible.
In the early 1990s, Richards saw the need for high angle rope rescue in the county, and he formed a group within the Coalmont Fire Department.
Richards told the guys on the fire department when he turned 50, that ‘if the Lord would give me 10 more good years, I would be satisfied.’
Now, he is nearly 73, with the health and ability to go on with the mission.
In addition to his work with the fire department, he volunteers with groups rappelling at Stone Door. He also volunteers annually to teach the Youth Leadership Class rappelling.
Richards served several terms on the Grundy County Housing Authority including as chairman. He has been an ordained minister since 1979, and served as pastor for several churches in the county.
His love for community is great, however, his love for family is greater. He enjoys his precious time with his wife Kate.
Richards came to Grundy County from his home state of Maryland in 1964. He tells everyone, ‘I’m a hillbilly by choice, and I have never found a place with better people than right here!’”
“Thank you Mr. Richard, for your hard work and dedication! I am so thankful to have caring citizens, like you that are willing to sacrifice in order to make a difference in the lives of others. Congratulations on being named the June Volunteer of the Month.” stated Mayor Michael Brady.
