Jr Jackets Win in Overtime

The Chris Pickett field was full of excitement as the Jr Jackets defeated Marion County in overtime on Thursday, September 7 winning 36-34. This win put the young Jackets 2-2 for the season.
It was a hard fought game between the two teams with a halftime score of 6-6. The battle continued in the second half as the Jackets scored with only seconds left in the game to bring the score to 28-28. The Jr Jackets won the overtime toss and chose to go on defense first. Marion County scored on third down but the Jackets stopped the Warriors extra point attempt. The Jackets offensive line was determined as it was their turn in overtime. Quarterback Huntley hands off to Tate behind his running backs Cash and Rollins and finds pay dirt on second down. Tate’s number was called again to convert on the extra point as he went in around the left side for the win.
“This was a game between two good teams and our guys just wanted it more. You could not ask more out of a group of players than what we got tonight, “says Coach Graham.
“All of our players were talking about the numbers that Marion County had. Their sidelines were full and their stands were packed but we told our boys we just play 11 at a time and that it’s a team effort. We had been telling them all week that our fans would be there to support them and they were to now go out and make Grundy County and themselves proud.
“The Jackets have been searching for a defense all year. We just had so many injuries this year and our kids had to fight back from low numbers and adversity all year. Our kids made a step up that ladder this past week and some have grew up. We have been telling our players all year that they have to step up to a different level of ball this year and next year our eighth graders will have to step up once again to players that are faster and stronger than what they have been used to. They did that this week and gave 110% playing with a lot of heart and believed they could beat the odds stacked against them.”
Coach Graham also talked about the parent support saying, “It has just been outstanding again this year. Our kids have had everything they needed, from pre-game meals to a first class dressing room. They continue to work hard with fundraisers to assure that we have the best equipment possible.”
