Coach Jones’ Yellow Jackets came out on top as the District 7AA tournament champs. The Yellow Jackets baseball team has not won a district tournament championship since 2004, when Coach Tom Melton took his team to fourth place in the state. The Jackets clinched their title in only 6 innings defeating the Cumberland County Jets 12-2.

The Jackets started the game out a little shaky giving up a run in the first inning due to a couple of errors. By the third inning the jitters were gone and the Jackets were playing tough ball. Blane Harris led the Jackets off in the third with a single and scored their first run on a double from Evan Jaynes. Kenzie Hill put the ball in play to score Jaynes giving them a 2-1 lead. The Jackets continued racking up runs while holding the Jets scoreless. A double from Jaden Ruehling scored 2 more runners in the fourth. Ruehling then scored on a double from Harris for a 5-1 lead. The Jackets put 2 runs on the board in the fifth after Hill scored on a single from Trey Hampton and a sacrifice fly from Alex Killian sent Hampton across the plate for a 7-1 lead. The Jets scored 1 in the sixth bringing the score to 7-2. Harris again led the Jackets off with a single in the sixth inning. Jaynes reach on a walk. A single from Noah Bean scored Harris. Hill added to the lead with a double scoring Jaynes and Bean. Killian blasted one to right field to score Hill. Jacob Thomas hit a walk off double to score Killian and end the game early with a 12-2 Yellow Jacket win. Harris went the distance on the mound getting the win, giving up 5 hits, 2 runs, and striking out 5.
Harris led at the plate hitting 3 for 3 with a double, 2 RBIs, a stolen base and 2 runs scored. Thomas hit 2 for 3 with a double, a RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored. Ethan Chouinard went 1 for 2 and scored a run. Jaynes and Ruehling were both 1 for 3, both with a double and a RBI. Jaynes had a stolen base and 2 runs scored and Ruehling scored a run. Bean, Hill, and Hampton all went 1 for 4 and all with a run scored. Hill notched a double and 3 RBIs and Bean had 1 RBI. Killian had 2 RBIs and a run scored.
Region play began on Monday night for the Jackets. They faced Upperman in the first round defeating them 4-1 advancing them to the regional finals on Wednesday in Smith County. Wednesday’s game will determine if the Jackets will host a sectional game on Friday or travel. As of now, there are only 16 AA teams left playing and only 8 AA teams will be left after Friday. A win Friday will put the Jackets playing in the AA State Tournament.
