Grundy baseball won their second matchup against Cumberland County 5-4. After having some early leads, the Jackets couldn’t pick up a win in the Community Viking Classic. They lost to Hubbard, OH 8-2, Ross, OH 3-0, University, IN 9-7, and Community 6-5.
“Last week was not a good week for our baseball program. We went 1 and 5, but the losses are not what concerns me, how we lost is what is concerning. In four of the five losses, we had the lead and when the other team answered we did not. That is a mental toughness issue and it is on me to get that corrected. We have tremendous young men in our program and good baseball players, but we were hit with adversity last week, and failed to get up off the matt.
“In talking to our guys, we explained to them that great teams are forged by adversity and pressure. Baseball is an extremely easy game when things are going your way, but it can become the toughest game in the world when things go airy. In baseball, you have to embrace failure and know that you are going to fail, so when you do (and you will) it does not affect your mindset or how you play.
“Last week is going to be the defining week of our season. We are either going to bounce back and be much better for the tough lessons we learned, or we will go the other direction and get worse. Knowing our young men like I do, I think we are going to become a much better team. We have a big series with Bledsoe in district play this week and then go to Franklin County and play three really good teams in the Rebel Classic, says Coach Jones.
