The Yellow Jackets had a rough week last week and Upperman’s Bees didn’t show any sympathy Friday night in Baxter, downing Grundy 48-6. The loss dropped Grundy to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in Region 4 Class 3A.
Upperman scored on a 7-yard run and a 6-yard pass in the first quarter to lead 12-0. They posted a 33-yard run, a 35-yard pass, a 2-yard run, and another 35-yard pass in the second quarter to lead 41-0 at the half.
The Bees added a 24-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter to go up 48-0.
“It was a rough night. We looked like we regressed which is absolutely what we don’t want to happen. We had been improving since Whitwell but it looked like we went back to Whitwell. We had starters out. We had some people playing new positions to try and get us going the right way.
“I thought Kevin Castro played as good as he could have. I thought Corbin Lusk played as good as he could have. I thought the offensive line played hard, but they had a lot of missed assignments and we’ll have to correct that. Defensively, we couldn’t get lined up, we had blown assignments and we made it fairly easy for Upperman to score. We just have to regroup and play South Pittsburg and work on this week. It’s not brain surgery, it’s just fundamentals. Alignment and reads can be worked on and that’s what we’re going to have to do,” said Coach Casey Tate.
Kevin Castro led the offense with 59 yards on 12 carries. Cody Crisp topped the Jacket defense with 5 tackles.
Grundy travels to South Pittsburg this week. The Pirates are 2-2 on the season. They lost 12-7 to Sequatchie County, defeated Bledsoe County 28-21, lost to Marion County 62-21, and defeated Copper Basin 35-21.
The Jackets vs. the Pirates has always been a strong rivalry. That should be all Yellow Jacket fans need to…Get out to the game!
