The Grundy County Jackets and Lady Jackets played two District 7 – AA games last week at the friendly confines of “Ricky Richards Gym” on the GCHS campus. The Jackets managed a split as they lost last Tuesday night to Cumberland County 60 – 55, but rebounded to beat the Bledsoe County Warriors 59 – 56 last Friday night. The Lady Jackets dropped both of their district games, losing 72 – 34 to Cumberland County and 56 – 33 to Bledsoe County.
The teams played host to Huntland Tuesday night. That was to be the last game for the Lady Jackets until Tuesday, January 8, when they travel to Sequatchie County. The Jackets, meanwhile will play two more games before they travel to Sequatchie County. Today (Thursday), they will play Franklin County at Blackman High School in Murfreesboro at 4:30 p.m. Tomorrow, they will play Tullahoma at Blackman, also at 4:30 p.m.
Cumberland County 60 Jackets 55
The defending District 7 – AA champions came to Grundy County and held off the Jackets 60 – 55 in their bid to defend their championship. The Jackets played the Jets tough and are ready to give them a run for their title. The visitors used a 38 – 25 edge in the second and third quarters to keep the Jackets at bay. Senior Cullen Anderson led the Jacket attack with 11 points. Junior wing Eli Tipton chipped in with 10 markers. The Jackets continued to show balance with nine players hitting the scoring column. They also connected on seven shots behind the arc.
Jackets 59 Bledsoe County56
The Jackets used a strong third quarter to take the lead and held on to defeat the Warriors 59 – 56. With 10 Jackets scoring and another strong outing from behind the arc with 13 three’s, the Jackets used a good defensive effort to hold off the Warriors. They only allowed 21 second half points in earning their second district win on the year. Anderson was the lone Jacket in double figures with 17 points.
Cumberland 72 Lady Jackets 34
The Lady Jackets had no answer for the defending district champion Lady Jets and their all state player Gracie Dishman. The Lady Jets exploded for a 27 – 5 second quarter to all but seal the deal. Senior post Delaney Hughes led the Lady Jackets with 8 points. Dishman led all scorers with 26 points.
Bledsoe County 56 Lady Jackets 33
The Lady Jackets were very much in this game at the half as they trailed 31 – 25. The second half was another story. The Lady Jackets couldn’t get the lid off the basket as they scored only eight second half points. Defensively, they limited Bledsoe to 25 points, but couldn’t find the offense needed to overcome the Lady Warriors. Junior post Kiera Hobbs led the Lady Jackets with 10 points. The Lady Jackets connected for only 2 of 13 from the charity stripe and only made one three point attempt.
The Jackets are 10 -2 on the season and are 2 – 1 in district play. The Lady Jackets are 2 – 9 overall and 1 – 2 in District 7 – AA.
