The Grundy County Yellow Jackets lost three games in the Coffee County Christmas Tournament last week, dropping their record overall to 3 – 10. The Jackets played in the Whitwell Tournament beginning last night (Wednesday) against host Whitwell. The Lady Jackets also opened up against their hosts. The teams will play again today (Thursday) and tomorrow. Both teams return to regular season action next Friday, January 6, with a home district doubleheader with Chattanooga Christian beginning with the girls’ contest at 6 p.m.
Red Bank 53 Jackets 43
The Lions held off the hard working Jackets in this game to win 53 – 43. The Jackets trailed
28 – 23 at intermission and actually rallied to take a 33 – 32 lead, but the Lions ended the quarter on a 7 – 0 run and then started the fourth stanza on a 4 – 0 run to put the Jackets away. Will Thomas led the winners with 18 points, while Trey Hampton led the Jackets with 18 markers.
Community 56 Jackets 51
The Jackets lost this seesaw battle as the Vikings outscored them 18 – 10 in the fourth and decisive quarter to take the victory 56 – 51. The Jackets had rallied in the third quarter to take a three-point lead to the final quarter. Jackson Wisener led the winners with 22 points. Tyler Bushnell nailed five treys for 15 points including three big bombs in the fourth quarter. Dillon Whitaker added 10 points. Boo Goins and Trent Hampton led the Jackets with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Franklin Co. 46 Jackets 37
The Rebels won the rubber game of the match against the Jackets as they withstood another Jacket rally and cashed in on their free throws down the stretch for the 46 – 37 victory. The Jackets took the lead at 3:10 of the fourth quarter on sophomore Cullen Anderson’s two charity tosses. However, a three pointer by the Rebels and a three point play by Cody Lester and the Rebels had a seemingly insurmountable lead at 39 – 36. The Rebels added free throws down the stretch to pull away for the victory. Draven Tate scored 14 points to lead the win, while Lester added 10 markers. Anderson led the Jackets with nine points, including a 7 of 8 performance at the charity stripe.
