The Grundy County Yellow Jackets opened the 2019 baseball season on a soggy home field Monday night and rallied past the Whitwell Tigers 2 – 1.
Sophomore Jarom Huntley started and went three innings, followed by junior Jayden Marcom and sophomore Alex Killian who went two innings each to limit the Tigers to one run on four hits. The trio combined for 11 strikeouts, three base on balls, and two hit batsmen. Huntley had five K’s, Marcom three K’s, and Killian closed the door with six strikeouts to secure the season opening victory.
The Jacket offense managed six hits led by Killian’s 2 – 3 at the dish. Killian drove home the first run in the fourth inning scoring Ethan Chouinard who had led off the inning with a single and stole second and third. Bailey Hill drove home the decisive run in the fifth when he plated Marcom who had singled and stole second and third himself.
Killian pitched a strong sixth with a three up and three down two strikeout performance. He came out strong in the seventh and struck out the first two batters making it four K’s in a row before the Tigers put together back to back singles before a fly ball to Chouinard ended the threat.
