Jackets hit the Gridiron, Jr. Jackets To Scrimmage

The 2016 edition of the Grundy County Yellow Jacket football team held their first full contact scrimmage at Crisp Field last Friday evening as they entertained Eagleville and Moore County in a three way tilt. As the teams rotated in round robin fashion for 20-minute periods, the teams seem to be pretty evenly matched.

118871GCHS head coach Casey Tate offered his assessment of the scrimmage. “We came out a little sluggish, but got rolling once we got our feet wet. This seems to be a trait of a young team. I thought our seniors played well and did a good job keeping the younger players motivated. We have plenty of work to do, technique wise, but I was proud of the effort our team gave. I thought to QB’s played better and made better decisions. The RB’s need more consistency in terms of attacking the line of scrimmage. The O-line needs more reps on technique.

“Defensively, I thought we played well, we just have to prevent big plays. I accepted a penalty on third down that normally I would’ve declined that put Eagleville in a third and long situation to see how we would defend it. They converted, so we need to work more on situations, defensively, but overall I was pleased. With a couple of starters out with injuries, it gave a few players their first chance at varsity action and I thought they handled it well, overall. We have work to do this week and then we will give it another trial run in Chattanooga on Friday.”

Coach Tate was referring to the three-way scrimmage on August 5, at Grace Baptist Academy. The scrimmage will begin at 5 p.m. (CDT), and will include Midway High School.

Remember the Sequatchie Valley Jamboree is next Friday, august 12, in South Pittsburg beginning at 6 p.m. The Jackets will play Silverdale in the opening quarter and Lookout Valley in the sixth quarter.

Also, the Junior Jackets are slated to scrimmage Flintville this Saturday morning at 9 a.m., at the old high school. Head coach Derryl Graham wants to encourage all fans to come and get a look at the 2016 edition of the Junior Jackets. This will be their only scrimmage, because the season begins August 11, at Dayton City.
