The Grundy County Yellow Jackets lost to the Smith County Owls 15 – 0 on a soggy, muddy Crisp Field last Friday night as the most bizarre regular season in the history of high school football came to an end. The Jackets concluded their season with a record of 2 – 7 overall. In Region 4, Class 3A the Jackets were 1 – 3.
Even though the Jackets lost the game, they will play in the TSSAA playoffs tomorrow night (Friday) at 6 at Red Bank High School in Chattanooga. They will be the fourth seed from Region 4 in the playoffs.
The Jacket defense played a solid game. The Owls managed just one touchdown, and the Jacket defense held the Owls to three field goals for their other scores. Each field goal came in the second, third, and fourth quarter.
Heavy rain on Wednesday and Thursday, accompanied by a cool and cloudy Friday for most of the day, did not allow much time for the field to dry, giving both teams a soggy field last week.
The wet conditions and a stout Owl defense up front gave the Jacket offense trouble all night long, as the Jackets never really threatened to score. Most of their offense came between the 30 yard lines.
Nevertheless the Jackets fought hard, just as they have all year long. These young men and their coaches have worked hard to improve and reach their goal of making the playoffs. After completing the 2019 season 0 – 19 and dropping the first five games of 2020, Friday night’s game was a show of defensive strength.
Many people across the state wondered if the 2020 football season would even happen. There were many questions and concerns right up until August. Although there have been many games canceled throughout the year, the regular season survived for the large majority of teams, and it’s time for the playoffs.
