Lady Jackets end season in district tourney

The Grundy County Lady Yellow Jackets and Yellow Jackets finally got to return to the hardwood last week to end the 2019 -20 regular season, at Tyner Academy in Chattanooga, last Tuesday night, and against Cumberland County, at “Ricky Richards Gym,” on senior night last Friday night. The teams lost two home games the previous week because the central office wouldn’t allow them to play with school being dismissed because of illness.
The Lady Jackets split their final two games winning a thriller at Tyner 47 – 46, then dropping a hard fought contest with the Lady Jets of Cumberland County 65 – 47. The Lady Jackets ended the regular season with a 9 – 12 record overall and 2 – 6 in District 7 AA. The Lady Jackets entered the district tournament Monday night as the fifth seed. They played Bledsoe County, the fourth seed, and lost 61-51.
The Jackets dropped both decisions last week. The Tyner Rams, one of the best Class AA teams in the state, raced past the Jackets 86 – 58. Meanwhile, the Jackets suffered their second last-second loss of the season to the Jets of Cumberland County 74 – 73. The losses ended the Jackets regular season at 12 – 10 overall and 6 – 2 in District 7 AA. The second-seeded Jackets will play the third-seeded Warriors of Bledsoe County tonight (Thursday), at 6 p.m., at Sequatchie County High School. If the Jackets win tonight, they will be in the championship game Saturday night, at 7:30 p.m., at Sequatchie County. If they lose, they will play at 6 p.m., Saturday night.

The Lady Jackets led throughout the contest and held on to defeat the host Lady Rams 47 – 46 with a tough defensive stand in the final nine seconds. The Lady Jackets forced the Lady Rams to go side to side, instead of sprinting straight down the court and forced an errant three point try from half court to seal the victory.
The inside presence of senior Kiera Hobbs and junior McKenzie Broadway proved too much for the Lady Rams as they dominated inside play with a combination of 26 points and also provided several rebounds and blocked shots. Hobbs led the way with 18 points, while Broadway added eight points with six of those coming in the pivotal fourth stanza. Peyton Mainord and Emma Seagroves connected from behind the arc, while the Lady Jackets were 7 -11 from the charity stripe.

The Lady Jets have been the dominant team in District 7 AA for the last three years and they do it with speed, quickness, and an up tempo game that makes their opponents play way faster than they should. Last Friday night was a perfect example. The Lady Jackets played with a lot of toughness and effort, but the Lady Jets up tempo style forced the Lady Jackets into turnover after turnover and several easy missed shots. Kiera Hobbs with 14 points and Jordan McCullough with 12 points led the way for the Lady Jackets.
Tyner 86 Jackets 58
The Rams raced out to a 27 – 8 first quarter lead and never looked back. The fast and talented team from Chattanooga was too much for the Jackets to be able to overcome a slow start. The Rams placed five players in double figures. Jaden Ruehling led the Jackets with 16 points, while Nathan Coffelt and Eli Tipton added 13 and 10 points, respectively. The Jackets connected on seven three pointers with Tipton and Coffelt hitting two each. Ruehling, Will Jackson, and Jordan Hackworth hit one each. The Jackets were a cool 7 – 17 from the free throw line.
CCHS 74 Jackets 73
An unbelievable game in front of an unbelievable crowd on “Senior Night”. The Jackets fought from start to finish, but couldn’t hang on to what seemed a safe lead at 73 – 70 with :03.2 left in the game after Nathan Coffelt hit the second of two free throws. Reese Dykes of the Jets drove past a Jacket defender and got past half court and made a desperation three point shot and was fouled at the buzzer. The Jackets intended to foul and attempted to foul on the floor, but the official ruled the try had begun when Dykes picked up the ball as he was fouled by a Jacket defender. Several video replays showed the foul looked as if it was on the floor, but in real time, the call was consistent with the definition of a try. The officials put :00.3 back on the clock and Dykes calmly sank the winning free throw as the Jackets were unable to get the ball down court for a tap at the basket.
It was a heartbreaking loss, but the Jackets still are in great position to advance to the championship game if they take care of business tonight against Bledsoe County. A win Saturday night should put the pain of the Jets’ season sweep of the Jackets behind them, because being top seed from this district in Region 4 AA is a must.
Jaden Ruehling led the Jackets with 25 points. Jordan Hackworth added 17 points and Thaddaeus Blackburn scored 14 points. The Jackets didn’t help their cause as they were 10 – 21 from the charity stripe. They did manage 11 three pointers. Hackworth made five including three big bombs in the fourth quarter. Ruehling added four more. Tipton and Coffelt had one each.
